The development of this seventeenth century district is linked to the building of the church of S. Sofia and the migration of the population towards land more suitable for cultivation further down the valley.
It owes its name to the complex of houses which sprang up around the old Piazza delle Ficacciate.
These houses were covered with barrel and cloister vaults in the form of swellings, which in Neapolitan slang are called "boffe".
