Slow and fast-food: two apparently contrasting culinary concepts which, at Capri's Donna Rachele wine bar and restaurant, share the very same emphasis on quality. Here, within steps of the Piazzetta, customers can pass an entire evening relaxing over a leisurely meal amongst friends or drop in for a quick snack before heading home after a night on the town, in the knowledge that, be it a full-blown dinner or the merest nibble, everything that comes out of Donna Rachele's kitchen is prepared with the very finest of locally sourced ingredients.

In the restaurant dining room, clients are treated to exciting contemporary versions of traditional local dishes: from Neapolitan sushi to ravioli capresi and breaded anchovies. The wine bar is the ideal choice for those eager to taste one of the 160 excellent labels on the wine list, accompanied by generous platters of Italian cheeses and cold cuts. Customers wishing to dine al fresco should try to grab a place on one of the little balconies overlooking the rooftops of Capri.

Until Loredana inaugurated her wine bar, there was not a single place on the island which stayed open until the early hours of the morning, all year round. No doubt Loredana inherited her entrepreneurial spirit and love of good food and wine from her great grandmother, Donna Rachele. In the late 1800's, Rachele, who owned a little restaurant in Anacapri, became famous for having served none other than the then King of Italy, Umberto II.

Disappointing value for money, despite a promising first impression

We chose Donna Rachele in Capri because it looked like a traditional local restaurant — the sign even says they are now in their fourth generation, which sounded authentic and inviting. When we arrived, the place was full, so we waited a few minutes to be seated, thinking that meant the food must be good. Service was fine, and the menu prices seemed only slightly higher than in Naples — maybe €2–4 more per dish. We ordered grilled beef, a platter with prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, parmigiana di melanzane, a pizza, and the “catch of the day,” which turned out to be a sea bass, nicely filleted in front of us by the waiter. The unpleasant surprise came when we received the bill: the fish alone was €70, bringing the total for 3 people to €230. That’s an absurd amount for a simple sea bass that wouldn’t cost more than €25 even in the famous seafood restaurants of Sorrento. It’s a real shame, because this detail completely overshadowed what could have been a nice lunch experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant and would advise the owners to reconsider this pricing policy — otherwise, they might indeed be the last generation carrying this name.

Avoid!

Was approached by a waiter whilst walking along the pavement outside. He described the freshly baked bread and home cooking so we decided to have lunch there. Inside was pleasant albeit perhaps a bit too much cluttered. We sat upstairs. Then - - We were asked if we wanted water and replied just a small water for one person. When a full 75cl bottle arrived we should have realised we were about to be taken advantage of! - We decided to order some of the bread he told us about. This appeared to be an issue. He asked how we would like it. We asked what types had been baked but did not get a reply. We suggested perhaps bruschetta or garlic to which he agreed so we ordered a portion of each. We then witnessed him going into a drawer, taking out a plastic bag and removing 4 small slices of bread! Even at this point we thought this must be for something else but no when the bread was served it was these slices. He had put chopped tomatoes on 2 of the small slices and incredibly whole cloves of garlic on the others. The bread was clearly not freshly baked and certainly not as suggested by him - The other food and drinks- ravioli and lasagne and white wine - were fine albeit not big portions. - He offered the sweet menu When the sweets arrived mine was not as described and appeared to be a lump of dry sponge which was inedible The fresh fruit and ice cream noted on the menu to accompany it was missing. When this was queried I was told the menu was wrong. Much to his annoyance I told him the sweet was not as described and I could not eat it. He did offer to replace it so I chose another sweet and it was nice. We did notice a female who sat at a desk downstairs checking their sweet menu and then frowning over at us! - the bill was presented by way of the same waiter advising how much whilst typing the total into the card machine. I did think it was a bit expensive and queried it but he advised it was correct. So we assumed it included a service charge but then saw him looking for a tip. When I suggested the bill included a service charge he disagreed so I then gave him a tip. We enjoyed our visit to Capri but it was only after reflection when we got back to the mainland did we realise we were overcharged (approximately 37€) and that it was deliberate. Not presenting an actual bill but the card machine meant I didn’t have a bill to check. I realise I should have asked for this. Having now read other reviews it became clear we were not the only ones to experience this. The actions of this restaurant reflect badly on the overall tourist experience and when we recall our time spent on the island this will be on our minds and relayed to others. I emailed the restaurant but unsurprisingly no reply received. Nobody likes being conned so shame on you Donna Rachele you tainted our trip to Capri!

The Piazzetta, pulsating heart of Capri, lies within steps of Donna Rachele. Clients will take little more than a minute to walk up the steps which, from the piazzetta lead up to the proto-cathedral of Santo Stefano, and reach the arched alleyway where the wine bar is located. Guests dining al fresco on the balconies are treated to a stunning view of the cathedral's bell tower and the center of Capri.
