Bay watching

  1. La Baia di Napoli's marvelous Mediterranean cuisine
  2. Nights to remember at the Lanterna Verde
  3. The unforgettable view of the sea from your suite

The position of Hotel San Michele, is considered unique, perched, as it is, on the cliff edge to the North of the island, 300 metres above sea level. From the bedrooms and numerous terraces there are enchanting views of Capri and the entire Gulf of Naples, with Sorrento, the Amalfi coast, volcano Vesuvio and the islands of Ischia and Procida clearly visible across the water. Behind the hotel lie the gentle hills of Anacapri, where, amidst the golden flowers of broom and the Mediterranean vegetation, one finds the ancient Barbarossa Castle.

Completed in 1880 in pure Neo-Classic style, the Hotel San Michele opened its doors to the public in 1894. At the time it represented one of the very first hotel establishments on the island of Capri and it was quickly to become the preferred haunt of a growing artistic and literary circle gravitating around the figure of the Swedish writer Axel Munthe. Amongst the guests of the period, we find the writer's faithful friend, Queen Victoria Friedrich Von Baden, wife of King Gustavo of Sweden. The hotel was also the residence of a group of painters of international fame who left many traces of their artwork in the hotel.

The original Luigi XVI style furnishings have been carefully preserved as have the gold framed mirrors, console, paintings, prints, arazzi and numerous period photos; all elements which take us back in time, to that romantic Capri described by the European writers of the 1800s.

Amongst the services are: a semi-Olympic swimming pool, the largest on the island; an health oasis, where oriental massage is carried out by professional masseurs; three modern tennis courts (Capri Sporting Club, directly opposite the hotel); free transfers by mini bus to Marina Grande for arrivals and departures; special rates for families and conference participants;

4 recently built spacious modern suites with splendid views across the gulf of Naples and the entire island of Capri; the "Sala Edwin" meeting room, with a seating capacity for 120 people and equipped with every type of conference equipment; a press room and guest assistance.

The hotel gives guests a choice of two restaurants, the poolside "Il Ristorantino" and "La Baia di Napoli", an elegant restaurant with panoramic views, for up to 200 guests. Both offer typical regional cuisine using products grown in the hotel's vegetable garden, so guaranteeing the quality and authentic flavours of the Mediterranean tradition. The well stocked cellar houses over 300 international labels, also served by the glass by expert sommeliers. San Michele is the leader on Capri in the organisation of banquets for special occasions.

The intimate bar-taverna, "La Lanterna Verde", the legendary wine bar built into the rock face, has, since the 1950s, hosted prestigious weekly live music events. The most famous groups have appeared over the years at the Lanterna, performing all sorts of music from Blues to Jazz, from Classical to Neapolitan repertoires. The taverna is managed directly by the family who own the hotel.

Glorious AnaCapri Hotel

This is an exquisite old world hotel with one of the world’s best views. Pros and Cons: Pros Superb position. Great views over the child of Naples from everywhere. Dinner was superb - though no English translation in the menu. Excellent chef and superb service from waiter GianCarlo. Hotel garden beautiful - and the pool area. Shuttle driver Salvatore was outstanding - excellent English and most accommodating for transport arrangements. Receptionist on check-in was very efficient and even wheeled our suitcases to our room! Waiter Eduardo at breakfast was good too. Our room was wonderful - spacious and good terrace with magnificent view. Price very reasonable for such a well positioned hotel. Cons The hotel wifi was HOPELESS. Hard to connect, very weak, then constantly and infuriatingly dropping out regularly. Just upgrade it! Breakfast was basic and terrible, buffet-style but no attention paid to items that ran out, and cold scrambled eggs a feature, along with greasy scraggy bacon. But all in all, a wonderful four day stay. As Gen MacArthur said - I will return!

It is the Third party year that we spend a wonderful week-long holiday in August at this magnificent property. It is a complete place both for the eyes and from here enjoy enchanting views and to enjoy the semi-Olympic swimming pool, or the park overlooked by the beautiful structure. To add a refined and tasty Restaurant Service at more than fair prices and a cpleta and fantastic breakfast for all needs. In short, we start with the desire to return. Special thanks to all the staff always friendly and helpful. Recommended from 0 to 100 years. Sonia and Enzo

Incredibly Rude

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We booked NINE months in advance with “pay at property.” Instead, they tried to charge a card the morning of our stay — while we were literally in the air flying into Naples — and because that card had been compromised, they decided to cancel our reservation and give away our room. Their “solution”? An email demanding a response within 30 minutes. I saw it 36 minutes after landing, immediately called them with a valid card, and they smugly told me they had already given away our booking. The man I spoke with could not have been ruder if he tried. Not only was he dismissive, but he actually had the audacity to blame US for their incompetence. No effort to help, no shred of decency, just attitude and indifference. We were traveling for our wedding and they truly could not have cared less. This is hands down the most unprofessional and arrogant hotel I’ve ever dealt with. Do yourself a favor: book literally anywhere else unless you want your trip ruined by people who have no respect for their guests or their own commitments.

Great hotel in a stunning location. Impeccable and accurate Service. Hearty and varied breakfast. Equipped with a large pool space with accurate facilities. Priceless terrace where you can enjoy aperitifs and dinners in front of the Gulf of Naples

Map

Hotel San Michele is situated at the entrance to the picturesque town of Anacapri. Perched on the cliff tops some 300 meters above the sea, the hotel boasts magnificent views of the entire bay of Naples.

Just a few steps separate Hotel San Michele from some of the island's most popular tourist attractions. The Monte Solaro chairlift, the Villa Axel Munthe Museum, the Church of San Michele and the historic center of Anacapri are all within easy walking distance.

Forming a spectacular backdrop to Hotel San Michele, there is the mountainside of Monte Solaro, home to the Barbarossa Castle and the WWF nature reserve. Ten minutes by bus (there is a stop just outside the hotel) or by taxi, are all its takes to reach the Piazzetta of Capri. The island's beaches and port of Marina Grande are a mere 15 minute journey away.
